Ava, Missouri, August 19, 2025 —

At the Ava Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday, at the Ava Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, a powerful moment of community pride unfolded. Nathan Stearns, representing White River Electric Cooperative, presented a check for $9,236 to American Legion Post 112 President Tom Bentley. The award, part of the White River Electric grant program, will fund an exterior wall mural celebrating America’s veterans and their sacrifice for freedom.

The American Legion Freedom Wall Mural, created by Ava artist Katie West, will span an impressive 10 feet high and 44 feet long. It will be displayed on the south side of the American Legion building, positioned directly across from Ava City Hall’s glass façade ensuring it will stand as a daily reminder of honor and sacrifice.

West described the project as a mission of both art and faith. “This mural had to be exciting, patriotic, and cheerful,” she said. “It needed to encompass almost all of our military branches, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I wanted it to inspire pride and spark learning, especially among schoolchildren, about the men and women who gave their time and often their lives for America’s freedom.”

Designing such a large and meaningful project was no small task. West turned to her faith for guidance. “In many hours of prayer and design work, God has truly come through,” she shared. Fittingly, when the mural is completed, the artwork will bear a joint signature: “Father God & Katie West.”

When finished, the Freedom Wall will not only beautify downtown Ava but also stand as a lasting tribute to veterans and a symbol of gratitude from the entire community.
