Ava, Missouri, August 23, 2025 —

At the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) hall on the square, a very special honor was presented to a man whose generosity and service have touched Ava and Douglas County for decades. That man is Tommy Lee Roberts, a quiet but steadfast supporter of the community.

The ceremony began with a proclamation read by Ava Mayor Kirk Pueppke, officially designating August 23 as “Tommy Roberts Day” in recognition of his lifelong service. The proclamation highlighted not only the many visible ways Tommy has supported Ava, but also numerous behind-the-scenes contributions the public may not have known.

Those gathered witnessed Tommy’s humble gratitude as he accepted the honor with characteristic modesty. Adding to the moment, local artist Katie West presented him with an original patriotic painting titled “Freedom,” while VFW Commander Billy Holt proudly held the framed pro-clamation.

The surprise celebration reflected the community’s deep appreciation for Tommy’s years of dedication. Though he is not one to seek the spotlight, his neighbors made sure he knew just how much his efforts have meant.
